As part of the “No to Single Use Plastic SUP” national initiative, launched by the Arab Office for Youth and Environment, a major cleanup campaign was held on Thursday, August 8, 2024, on Al-Warraq Island in Giza Governorate. The campaign aimed to clear the banks of the Nile River and surrounding areas of plastic and solid waste. The event was organized in collaboration with Jannat Al-Amin Charitable Association and Bayt Aly Al-Sakhr Association, with the active participation of 20 youth volunteers, and significant support from the local community.
The campaign began with a series of awareness activities, including educational sessions on the environmental and public health risks caused by single-use plastics. The sessions also introduced sustainable alternatives such as; cloth bags, glass and metals, and their practical applications in daily life.
Following these sessions, volunteers were divided into teams to collect and sort waste by type. Large quantities of plastic, glass, paper and metal were gathered. The campaign’s success was largely due to the strong collaboration between volunteers and the local residents, resulting in a significant positive impact.
This campaign is part of a broader series of field activities and campaigns organized by the “No to SUP” national initiative, which is active across multiple governorates. The ongoing efforts focus on raising environmental awareness and encouraging local communities to reduce plastic consumption and promote sustainable development. Additional similar activities are planned in the coming period to further enhance environmental awareness and foster eco-friendly behaviors.
The “No to SUP” national initiative remains committed to its mission of raising environmental awareness nationwide, in partnership with local organizations and civil society. The initiative strives to foster a responsible and informed community that contributes to environmental preservation for future generations by reducing reliance on single-use plastics and promoting recycling practices
