The date of January 27 marks a significant milestone in Egypt’s environmental journey each year, commemorating the enactment of the first environmental protection law. It is on this day that Egypt celebrates National Environmental Day, an initiative launched by the Arab Office for Youth and Environment in 1997 and officially recognized as a national occasion by the Prime Minister starting from the 24th celebration in 2020.

This year, the Arab Office for Youth and Environment will celebrate National Environmental Day on Monday, January 27, 2025, under the theme: “The Nexus Between Water, Food, Energy, and Ecosystems: Foundations for Sustainability.” The celebration aligns with national efforts to raise awareness and foster collaboration among all segments of society to achieve a balance between development needs and the preservation of natural resources.

National Environmental Day serves as an invaluable opportunity to enhance environmental awareness and inspire collective action to protect our planet and secure a better future for coming generations. The event exemplifies genuine partnership between governmental entities and civil society, encouraging environmentally friendly practices to safeguard ecosystems and conserve natural resources.

The celebration will feature a diverse range of activities designed to engage environmental stakeholders, including youth, NGOs, and media professionals with an interest in environmental and sustainable development issues. Key activities include:

  • A youth competition aimed at promoting local or national initiatives that enhance sustainability in areas such as water, food, energy, and ecosystem conservation.
  • A competition for NGOs spotlighting the best community projects that contribute to strengthening the nexus between water, food, energy, and ecosystems.
  • A media competition highlighting outstanding media coverage that emphasizes the importance of environmental sustainability and promotes positive practices.

In addition to these competitions, the event will include panel discussions bringing together environmental and sustainable development experts with youth and NGO representatives to exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions. An environmental exhibition will also showcase modern technologies and innovations that contribute to conserving natural resources and improving quality of life.

The theme for this year, “The Nexus Between Water, Food, Energy, and Ecosystems,” underscores the critical interconnection of these elements in achieving sustainable development. Water is essential for food production and energy generation, while ecosystems play a pivotal role in maintaining this balance by supporting environmental equilibrium.

In preparation for this year’s celebration, the Arab Office for Youth and Environment invites all stakeholders, including government institutions and private entities, to participate in these events and support environmental initiatives. The organization also encourages youth to take part in the various competitions and share their innovative ideas to help build a sustainable future.
