In a significant move toward sustainability, the “No to Single Use Plastic- SUP” campaign, launched by the Arab Office for Youth and Environment, achieved impressive results along the banks of the Nile in Fayoum Governorate on Wednesday, August 7, 2024. Approximately 20 young volunteers, in collaboration with the Fayoum Environmental Protection Association, successfully collected large quantities of plastic and solid waste from the Bahr Youssef area.
The campaign focused on raising awareness about the harmful impact of plastic pollution on aquatic ecosystems and public health, while encouraging the community to adopt more environmentally responsible practices. Volunteers effectively cleared a wide section of the Nile’s watercourse, removing substantial amounts of plastic bags, bottles, empty containers, and other waste materials that pose a threat to the ecosystem.
This successful outcome was made possible through coordinated efforts with several government entities, including the local unit of Fayoum City and Center, the Directorate of Youth and Sports, the Solid Waste Unit, and the Population Unit at the governorate’s headquarters. These organizations provided essential logistical support, including equipment, manpower and the necessary facilities to ensure the smooth execution of the campaign.
This campaign is part of a broader series of activities organized under the “No to SUP” national initiative, aimed at reducing plastic pollution across Egypt. The initiative calls on all members of society to join these efforts in creating a greener and cleaner future for Egypt
